Head of Training & Development job, Remote, South Africa


Role description

  • Thought leadership and strategy development in the training and development function.
  • Develop the use of technology and partners in support of the training function.
  • Lead the training and development department in the creation of training programs and materials.
  • Work closely and in collaboration with various department heads in developing high quality and effective training solutions specific to the requirements of the different departments and to ensure that quality training is provided to employees in accordance with such requirements.
  • Overseeing and co-ordinating the career and personal development of specific individuals identified from time to time, with an emphasis on supporting the achievement of the employer’s employment equity objectives.




  • Plays a highly collaborative role where they build solid cross-functional relationships with departmental heads and management across the business.
  • Collaborates with departmental heads and managers, in order to identify areas that require training and also to develop program requirements unique to each department.
  • Works closely with key stakeholders in addressing gaps in the overall training mission.
  • Plays an analytical role where they conduct current and ongoing strategic assessments of business-wide training and development programs and initiatives.
  • Overseeing the creation of content, e-learning, collateral and other training materials that will impact behaviour-changing training using various training theories inclusive of job aids, facilitator and participant guides, on-the-job training systems, tutorials, and demonstration models.
  • Drives the development of programs that incorporate overall business objectives.
  • Develops and maintains interactive learning solutions that drive measurable results for the business and guarantee that those solutions are instructionally sound and are up to the business’s quality standards.
  • Responsible for the creation of testing and evaluation processes of the effectiveness of training programs.
  • Responsible to measures program delivery quality, which ensures continuous improvement, maintenance, and adjustment in program delivery approaches accordingly in order to maintain pace with business growth.
  • Reports results to key stakeholders for further and strategic decision making and to influence informed decision making.
  • Keeping it up to date with the latest training practices, trends, and technology.
  • Responsible to model best practices in training and development activities in order to ensure maintenance of training programs of a high standard, which support operational delivery of a high standard.
  • Administers spending against the departmental budgets.


  • Assisting with the identification of high potential employees for development.
  • Creating development plans and objectives for such employees.
  • Overseeing the implementation of such development plans and sharing accountability for the achievement of development objectives.
  • Overseeing and co-ordinating mentoring programmes etc. in support of development objectives.

Operating model:

  • It is envisaged that the role will be of a strategic and co-ordinating nature where extensive use will be made of outsourced service providers and third party products.



  • A relevant Post Graduate/Masters qualification in training & development.
  • At least 5 years' working experience in a training and development capacity, preferably working as a Senior Manager Training and Development.
  • Experience implementing and using learner management systems.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Proven track record in coordinating and managing the build out and delivery of training systems.
  • Excellent time management, problem-solving, and both verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to evaluate and research training options and alternatives.
  • A suitable candidate will also have demonstrated successful experience leveraging technology in order to deliver training in new and innovative ways.
